Kato #KAT1761121. Being long lived units, Santa Fe's F3's were continuously being upgraded, with late era revisions having their distinctive chicken wire grills replaced by the stainless steel grills that EMD was fitting on their newer F7 productions. These F3's ended up looking remarkably similar to their later built F7 cousins, though they still retained their early style roof fans.

Kato #KAT376582. Designed for use in Amtrak's inner-city lines, the F40PH series of locomotives was ordered as a replacement for the EMD SDP40F type, Amtrak's first series of locomotives built new for them since its inception in 1971. Following updates in federal regulations in 1997, Amtrak's fleet of F40PH locomotives were upgraded with ditch lights (low mounted headlamps that help alert street and walking traffic to the presence of oncoming locomotives at grade crossings), which this particular model replicates.

Kato #KAT1764818. As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run - Early units featured an 81 nose, chicken wire grills and a ratchet brake vs. a brake wheel that would be found on later units. C&NW #6847 and #6858 would carry the as delivered paint scheme that adorns them through their entire operational life, with #6847 remaining operational to this day at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL.

Kato #KAT376390. While originally designed to house a 6000hp engine, technical difficulties resulted in many SD90MAC's being equipped with a 4300hp engine instead, which gave them the designation SD90/43MAC. The locomotives were reliable and effective enough with these engines that though the option to upgrade was given, most locomotives kept the as-shipped 4300hp AC traction engine.

Kato #KAT1764367. The EMD NW2 is a 1,000 horsepower yard switcher, its distinctive twin-stack profile and short radiator creating a distinctive silhouette. Perhaps ironic, considering its 1000 horsepower engine, the N in NW2 stood for nine hundred horsepower, with the W designating that it was a welded frame locomotive, instead of a cast frame. The CB&Q NW2s enjoyed a long life of use, not only in switching yards but also moving freight, and were a common sight on lightly-used branch lines. A common replacement on the NW2 were the type of smokestacks installed; the standard short stacks were too low and would often get smoke in the eyes of the operators, and as a result the CB&Q retrofitted its NW2s with tall

Perhaps ironic, considering its 1000 horsepower engine, the N in NW2 stood for nine hundred horsepower, with the W designating that it was a welded frame locomotive, instead of a cast frame. The Santa Fe acquired its first two NW2s in 1939, delivered at first with factory issue short exhaust stacks which they then replaced with the longer, conical stacks more commonly seen on later switchers.
