Kato #KAT376101. The General Electic P42 locomotive is also known as the "Genesis" locomotive. The P42 is a modern 4200 horsepower passenger locomotive used across the United States and Canada. Amtrak's P42 has replaced the EMD F40PH in revenue service and today they are used throughout the United States. Since their introduction, they have had a number of physical revisions to improve the ease of maintenance and parts replacements, including a bolt-on fiberglass nose panel (replacing the original's solid metal which was difficult to repair or replace) and a new headlight bezel that is more rounded than the previous square versions.

The "City of Los Angeles" was one of the Union Pacific's "City of" trains, and a direct competitor to trains such as the California Zephyr and Santa Fe Super Chief, and was typically pulled by four E9's in ABBA formation. EMD's bulldog-nosed E9 locomotives were ideal for passenger service due to their smooth ride and higher horsepower compared to other passenger locomotives such as EMD's own F3 and F7 locomotives.

Kato #KAT376582. Designed for use in Amtrak's inner-city lines, the F40PH series of locomotives was ordered as a replacement for the EMD SDP40F type, Amtrak's first series of locomotives built new for them since its inception in 1971. Following updates in federal regulations in 1997, Amtrak's fleet of F40PH locomotives were upgraded with ditch lights (low mounted headlamps that help alert street and walking traffic to the presence of oncoming locomotives at grade crossings), which this particular model replicates.

Kato #KAT1764818. As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run - Early units featured an 81 nose, chicken wire grills and a ratchet brake vs. a brake wheel that would be found on later units. C&NW #6847 and #6858 would carry the as delivered paint scheme that adorns them through their entire operational life, with #6847 remaining operational to this day at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL.

Kato #KAT376390. While originally designed to house a 6000hp engine, technical difficulties resulted in many SD90MAC's being equipped with a 4300hp engine instead, which gave them the designation SD90/43MAC. The locomotives were reliable and effective enough with these engines that though the option to upgrade was given, most locomotives kept the as-shipped 4300hp AC traction engine.

Kato #KAT1764365. The EMD NW2 is a 1,000 horsepower yard switcher, its distinctive twin-stack profile and short radiator creating a distinctive silhouette. Perhaps ironic, considering its 1000 horsepower engine, the N in NW2 stood for nine hundred horsepower, with the W designating that it was a welded frame locomotive, instead of a cast frame. The Santa Fe acquired its first two NW2s in 1939, delivered at first with factory issue short exhaust stacks which they then replaced with the longer, conical stacks more commonly seen on later switchers.

Kato #KAT1768507. The SD70ACe is the latest in the line of EMD's "70" locomotives that is intended to cut railroad costs for maintenance by providing a locomotive that is more efficient and more powerful, lessening fuel costs and the total numbers of running units. The Norfolk Southern's fleet of SD70ACe's have a number of redesigns from the as delivered Union Pacific units, including isolated cabs (identifiable by the visible angled seam running 45 degrees up and along the side of the cab) and specialized antenna arrangements on the cab roof.
