Being long lived units, Santa Fe's F3's were continuously being upgraded, with late era revisions having their distinctive chicken wire grills replaced by the stainless steel grills that EMD was fitting on their newer F7 productions. These F3's ended up looking remarkably similar to their later built F7 cousins, though they still retained their early style roof fans.

Amtrak's P42 has replaced the EMD F40PH in revenue service and today they are used throughout the United States. Since their introduction, they have had a number of physical revisions to improve the ease of maintenance and parts replacements, including a bolt-on fiberglass nose panel (replacing the original's solid metal which was difficult to repair or replace) and a new headlight bezel that is more rounded than the previous square versions.

Kato #KAT1765618. While originally designed to house a 6000hp engine, technical difficulties resulted in many SD90MAC's being equipped with a 4300hp engine instead, which gave them the designation SD90/43MAC. The locomotives were reliable and effective enough with these engines that though the option to upgrade was given, most locomotives kept the as-shipped 4300hp AC traction engine. Today, the Indiana Rail Road operates 14 SD90/43MACs leased from CEFX, using them to primarily pull coal trains from Indiana mines to power plants across the state.

Kato #KAT1760942. Built between 1976 and 1986, the C30-7 was a follow up to GE's successful U30C locomotive design. Design changes included larger, more prominent radiators and a "step"-like structure to the fore of the radiators which gave the long hood a subtly different shape to its predecessor. The Santa Fe had 44 C30-7's which received the Kodachrome paint at the time of the failed merger - a relatively large number “ several of which escaped repaint shops and survived into the BNSF era.
