Being long lived units, Santa Fe's F3's were continuously being upgraded, with late era revisions having their distinctive chicken wire grills replaced by the stainless steel grills that EMD was fitting on their newer F7 productions. These F3's ended up looking remarkably similar to their later built F7 cousins, though they still retained their early style roof fans.

The SD70ACe is the latest in the line of EMD's "70" locomotives that is intended to cut railroad costs for maintenance by providing a locomotive that is more efficient and more powerful, lessening fuel costs and the total numbers of running units. Kato #KAT1764367. The EMD NW2 is a 1,000 horsepower yard switcher, its distinctive twin-stack profile and short radiator creating a distinctive silhouette. Perhaps ironic, considering its 1000 horsepower engine, the N in NW2 stood for nine hundred horsepower, with the W designating that it was a welded frame locomotive, instead of a cast frame. The CB&Q NW2s enjoyed a long life of use, not only in switching yards but also moving freight, and were a common sight on lightly-used branch lines. A common replacement on the NW2 were the type of smokestacks installed; the standard short stacks were too low and would often get smoke in the eyes of the operators, and as a result the CB&Q retrofitted its NW2s with tall

Kato #KAT1760942. Built between 1976 and 1986, the C30-7 was a follow up to GE's successful U30C locomotive design. Design changes included larger, more prominent radiators and a "step"-like structure to the fore of the radiators which gave the long hood a subtly different shape to its predecessor. The Santa Fe had 44 C30-7's which received the Kodachrome paint at the time of the failed merger - a relatively large number “ several of which escaped repaint shops and survived into the BNSF era.

Perhaps ironic, considering its 1000 horsepower engine, the N in NW2 stood for nine hundred horsepower, with the W designating that it was a welded frame locomotive, instead of a cast frame. The Santa Fe acquired its first two NW2s in 1939, delivered at first with factory issue short exhaust stacks which they then replaced with the longer, conical stacks more commonly seen on later switchers.
