"Good kit but could be better"
jeremy.s.michels1
This kit needs work while building. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. There was little flash on the parts, but some of the parts fit wasn't so great and required filler. The problems were mainly when joining the fuselage together and then the wings to the fuselage. The cockpit wasn't very detailed. Just plain plastic and then decals were used for the instrument panels. One nice thing about the kit is that it was pretty cheap compared to the complaints I have. I'd recommend this kit to anyone, but a more experienced modeler could really make this a great kit.

Let’s start with what may not be so obvious, this is a YF-16 and not an f-16a. Hobbylinc lists this properly but the box art lists it as an f-16a. The YF-16 was a prototype. What this means is this model will not have the iconic rectangular fuel cells and will have a narrower nose as well, since the prototype did not need to house a radar. As other reviewers have stated, the box art is not the plane you get, nor do you receive the proper decals to make the plane on the box, rather you receive a very basic set of decals instead. The instructions are on a single sheet of paper that looks like a bad xerox. The kit itself is very basic, there are only a few pieces. It has fine recessed panel lines, very fine, some are almost disappear. There is a lot of flash and the fit is not exactly precise, so get ready to sand. The biggest letdown for me is the canopy. It’s one piece and seems undersized, it also has a poor fit. I would recommend gluing it before painting so you can sand and fill with putty to remove the obvious gaps. One positive is, the pilot figure was well done, in my opinion. This probably won’t be a show stopper but with some work you can get a decent plane, just a bit short on detail. This was my first model after a 25 year break. I chose this because it was inexpensive and if things went south I’d have little to lose. And while this plane did serve it’s purpose well, in retrospect had I known what was in the box, I would have spent a few $ more for the Hasegawa f-16a, a superior model in all aspects. In the end the Hasegawa would have been less expensive since for the academy f-16, I needed to buy third party decals. In general I would avoid this plane unless you want to build the iconic red white and blue YF-16 prototype.

"Not what I am used to seeing from Academy kits"

If I could give 0 stars for this kit I would. The instructions and markings for this kit are contrary to the one displayed on the listing and on the box. The coloration is also quite vague due to the poor quality instruction set. The kit is also of much poorer quality then what I am used to seeing with academy kits. I am curious to know if this a re-branded kit. I have built the special edition P51D/Me262 kit as well as the F6 3/5 kit. I also have the B17F but did not start building. The quality on these Academy kits are good. The details such as cockpit, panel lining and undercarriage are poor in the F-16 kit in comparison to the other kits I have mentioned. I will not build this kit and it shall be donated to the activities department of the Veteran's Home I work at. If you must jump at the reasonable price just know this is not a high detail kit and you will need to invest time and money to spruce up the detail. Also if you desire to build a historically accurate piece it will need to be heavily researched because the instructions and images given are inaccurate to say the least.
