This kit contains two versions of TOS Enterprise we have seen before: AMT's 1/650 and Polar Light's 1/1000 Enterprise. I've built both ships multiple times, so I purchased this kit thinking I was getting an extra kit of each at a reduced price.
The 1/650 kit is pretty much the same version that AMT has produced since the 1960's - no big surprises there. If you buy the Polar Lights kit individually, you will get pieces and decals to make four different versions of Enterprise: the Production Series ship, the 1st Pilot ship, the 2nd pilot ship, and coolest of all, the Mirror Universe version of the ship. So I was surprised and a little dismayed to see that this latest edition of the kit contains all the extra pieces for the different versions - BUT ONLY STICKERS FOR THE PRODUCTION VERSION. That's right, no decals - STICKERS!
To make matters even more baffling, the instructions do not explain why there are so many extra pieces. if you were seeing the PL 1/1000 Enterprise for the first time in this kit, you'd be mystified why they gave you so many additional pieces.
Another observation: I guess the Dad kit is supposed to be the larger 1/650 ship and the Son kit is the smaller 1/1000 ship. But why? The larger Enterprise is the simpler kit. It has about half as many pieces and is easier to paint and assemble.
One final gripe: The display stands of both ships do not match. Both ships look weird when assembled and set next to one another.
My advice: Buy this kit if you don't care about the lack of decals for the 1/1000 ship and you are looking for a cheap way to boost your kitbashing stock. Otherwise, I'd recommend you choose one of these two scales and buy just that version alone. The 1/1000 PL kit is the better one, for my money.
