Spotlight Review

"The usual Atlas quality."

This is a re-release of an Atlas pulpwood car I already own (#1606-4). There are a bunch of scale grab irons supplied with the car that you will have to install, but shouldn't be a big deal for most. More importantly the load that is included is barely OK so as I did you might want to order a Chooch pulpwood load (CHO7262) when you order the car for a more realistic looking model. The ends of the logs should be painted as they are too yellow, again not too big of a deal. The car itself is very high quality with good detailing and all metal except grab irons. The floor of the car is see through steel mesh as per prototype. Under car detailing is pretty good but not visible from a viewing angle when in service. Painting and printing is very good and foot stirrups are true to scale. The car has metal wheels and rolls freely. The couplers are a weak spot, plastic with no knuckle springs so order some Kadee metal couplers of your choice, but I recommend whisker type for ease of installation, although the No 5 couplers work just as well. Out of the box the car is very light at 95g when it should weigh 115g to be within NMRA guidelines. With the Chooch load it weighs 194g. That means these if modified these cars should be entrained as close to the loco as possible and another reason for metal couplers to upgrade the draft gear. Either way this is a quality model at a reasonable price and purchase would be money well spent.
