"Bachmann 62417 GP7 A very good buy."

This is a very good buy, particularly if this is someone's first venture into DCC operations. Detailing is pretty good. Cutting levers with pin brackets appears to be to scale as do the hand rails. Paint and lettering is very sharp including the tops of the stanchions that the handrail that runs through. They are black, true to prototype and accentuates the handrails, which are painted yellow, again true to prototype. The front ends of the steps are painted white as well. The Cotton Belt logo on the front end of the short hood is clear and even the builder's plate is legible with high magnification. On the sides of the long hood the Cotton Belt lettering is not correct. The train indicators are carrying the unit number. When it comes to the pilot and foot boards they are lacking detail, such as MU hoses. Easy to add detail if you wish and a simple matter to pain the foot boards to look like wood. The trucks are cast but looks like it has the leaf spring brackets but they are not separately applied. The headlights are a very good representation and dim when the unit standing still and once a direction is chosen they then brighten in that direction. A nice touch. The engine runs smoothly with exceptionally good low speed operation but is a bit noisy, which goes away at higher speed, one drawback of a can motor, so this is electric noise from the motor, not grinding gears in need of lubrication or anything like that. Both prototype and model engines get their pulling power from adhesion and that depends upon the weight of the locomotive. This engine weighs in at 406g (14.5 oz) compared with an Athearn Genesis GP9 (with sound) at 326g (11.6 oz) and an old Blue Box Athearn jeep tipping the scale at 289g (10.3 oz). The gear ratio is unknown but on its face the Bachmann unit should pull at least as well but maybe more than the Athearn product, although they certainly aren't in the same price range. And with regard to price range this engine exceeded my expectations, which is why I think this is a good buy.
