Beautiful Little Kit, with one Major Flaw

This kit of the tiny Soviet fighter has a tremendous amount of features packed into its 4-inch wingspan. The landing gear are nicely done, the cockpit is well-appointed, especially considering that it will be hard to see inside the tiny opening. There is wonderful surface detail, which gives the impression of structural pieces under the skin, without being overdone, and the rudder and elevators are molded as separate parts, allowing them to be posed easily (you don't see this feature on many 1:72 scale kits). The highlight of the kit, however, is the superb engine. Easily half the parts are dedicated to an engine with complete mount, cylinders, oil tank, and exhaust, and the cowling access panels are separate parts, allowing you to display the intricate parts. The fit is generally excellent, requiring virtually no putty, except around the engine area. I found I had to trim back the engine mount to get everything to fit. The cowlings are a bit dicey on fit as well, but you'll almost definitely want to leave them off to show your beautiful radial. The main problem with this kit, what kept me from giving it 5 stars, was the decal sheet. My set disintegrated almost as soon as it hit the water. The solution is to either raid your spares box (I found the Revell MiG-1 provided everything I needed), or coat the decals in Microscale decal film before immersing them. It's a shame the decals were so bad, because this is nearly a perfect kit.
