Excellent Limited-Run kit

The AZ Models Peashooter is crisply molded, with excellent recessed external detail and no flash or sink marks on the styrene parts. The interior is well-detailed, with a seat, control column, full sidewalls, detailed floor, rudder pedals, and a beautiful instrument panel. The access door can be posed open or closed. The only thing missing from the cockpit is some seatbelts. The resin engine is finely detailed, although my example showed serious mold defects, with many of the cooling fins missing or deformed.

As is typical of limited-run kits, the Peashooter lacks any locator pins or tab-and slot joints-it's all butt joints on this kit. This presents an additional challenge for the beginner, so beware. I do have to say, though-this was my first limited-run kit, and I was able to assemble the kit without too much difficulty. The other problem that inexperienced modelers might run into is that the kit does not include an injected plastic windscreen; instead you get a sheet of acetate from which you must cut the parts. Since the P-26's windscreen was all straight lines with no framing, this shouldn't present too much of a challenge, especially since the outline is clearly marked. Still, this can be a bit jarring if you don't know what to expect.

Surprisingly, most parts fit together relatively well. I needed plenty of filler around the wheel spats, but almost none anywhere else. Markings in this box are for an Olive Drab/Gray bird, a natural metal one, and a black night fighter. If you're looking for the more colorful yellow-wing examples, AZ has several other boxings, or you can spring for one of Starfighter Decals' excellent decal sheets, available for only a few bucks.

The mold quality, detail, and lack of gimmicky rivets and pre-drilled rigging holes put this kit head-and-shoulders above the ancient Revell offering, which is the only other Peashooter still in production in 1/72 scale (The Pavla kit, which I have no experience with, is no longer widely available). Recommended for someone looking to graduate to more challenging kits.
