The Hornet was the eigth aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy and the third one of the Yorktown type constructed under the limitations of the naval treaty. The Hornet had excellent equipment and anti-torpedo protection, but her anti-aircraft armament consisting of eight 5-inch (12.7mm) single-barrelled A.A. guns (38 calibres long) was rather weak. She was powered by turbine engine offering 120,000hp and made a speed of 34 knots.

The Iowa Class Battleships were the largest and final great battleships of the US Navy. They included the BB-61 Iowa, the BB-62 New Jersey, and the third ship, the famous BB-63 Battleship Missouri. These ships, which boasted an amazing 212,000hp allowing a 33knots max speed, were armed with massive 40.6cm main guns. USS Enterprise (CV-6), was the seventh U.S. Navy vessel to bear the name. Colloquially referred to as the "Big E", she was the sixth aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. A Yorktown class carrier, she was launched in 1936 and was one of only three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war (the others being Saratoga and Ranger). She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than any other US ship. These actions included the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, various other air-sea engagements during the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gu

One of the most famous and successful destroyer classes ever built was the U.S. Navy's Fletcher class that appeared during the World War period. A total of 175 sister ships proved to be the largest number for a destroyer class in the U.S. Navy inventory during the era. They were completed in two and a half years, showing a stunning example of wartime mass production. Development of the Fletcher class vessels began in mid October 1939, when the U.S. Navy General Board stated the initial characteristics requirements for their new destroyers. The Navy needed a larger and more versatile, multipurpose destroyers, to replace the then principle Benson/Livermore tyoe ships, which were the final deve

During the early stage of World War 2, the German Navy's "U-Boat" submarines posed a great threat to the Allied Forces in the North Atlantic Ocean. To counter them, new destroyers were built to escort transport vessels, as well as escort carriers that could provided constant air protection to the convoys for the length of their journey across the Atlantic. This type of aircraft carrier was a modification from certain merchant vessels, and the U.S. Navy made an extensive development and use of them for convoy escort and aircraft transportation.
