Based off of the C&NW Bi-Level commuter cars, the El Capitan Hi-Level cars were the first of their kind to be used in long distance service, pioneering the concept of affordable, reliable service and providing the basis for today's modern Amtrak fleets (the Amtrak Superliners were, in fact, built off the design of the original Santa Fe Hi-Level coaches and many Santa Fe cars ran alongside Superliners in the early days of Amtrak).

The Broadway ran from 1912 (although its train Nos. 28 and 29 operated from 1902 as the Pennsylvania Special) and outlasted the Pennsylvania Railroad, operating under Amtrak until 1995.

Kato #KAT356023A. The Chicago Regional Transportation Authority (known today as "Metra") took over a large number of Chicago & North Western Bi-Levels when it took over operation of Chicago's commuter rail system. The "Gallery" style cars were particularly effective for commuter service due to their design, and today's modern Metra cars share many similarities with these older RTA cars.

The modern Nippon Sharyo-built Gallery Bi-Level is based off of the same concept as the original Santa Fe "El Capitan" Bi-level design concept, whose success went on to inspire such double decker cars as Amtrak's Superliners and the Bombardier Bi-Level car which is also used in commuter service.

Kato #KAT356063. Delivery of the original Superliner 1 cars began in 1979 with the first cars operating on short runs originating in Seattle and Chicago. As more cars arrived, entire Superliner trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns. When originally delivered in the 1970s, Superliner I lounges were referred to as "Lounge Cafe" cars. These were fitted with enormous windows that wrapped upward into the ceiling, providing views of scenery along the train's route, like the dome cars of old.

As more cars arrived, entire Superliner trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns. Superliner dining cars have almost the entire upper level available for seating, while the galley (kitchen) occupies the entire lower level. A dumbwaiter is used to bring food to the dining level, as well as to return dishes and cutlery for washing.

Kato #KAT1560953. Baggage cars are a necessary part of any mid-to-long distance train as they provide room to store passenger luggage. Acquired by Amtrak in the 70's, many of Amtrak's heritage baggage cars are older than Amtrak itself - a tribute to their rugged construction and continued utility.
