Spotlight Review

"Big kit, bigger lack of detail."
I will start this by saying I did NOT hate this kit- I just wish it had more to offer right out of the box. For its 1/72 size - all of about 5 feet of it - the kit is lacking in a TON of detail. I was hoping for something with the exterior detail of the older 1/144 kits, with a better representation of the interior parts. I was sadly let down. There are also a lot of errors (stringers are missing, exterior parts missing, etc) in this kit - and for its size and price this shouldnt be. I spent a lot of time pouring over pictures, and the real thing on a trip to KSC, and making my own parts to 3d print. I went the TLAR route (that looks about right) to give it more of a Saturn V look, instead of being a huge tube with a pointy end. Actual building was easy, you just need to worry about and work on seams. Getting a nice smooth finish is key to this, and it took more time to make sure the seams are completely gone from the stage sections, than it did actually building it. The LEM and CSM and CM are all nicely detailed and are the same as offered in other Dragon kits. There are errors there too but nothing that is a deal breaker. Being careful with the paint and decals is also important with this - since it is very big, and very black/white. I used aftermarket decals on mine, because I was trying to model Apollo 14. After its all said and done, you will have a seriously impressive model of one of the most amazing machines ever built - and a lasting testament to what can be accomplished when people work together. This is absolutely not a beginners kit, but if you want a place to start your own research project, and try out some scratch building, then this is for you. I would build another if I had the chance, and I am also excited for their 1/72 Saturn IB thats been announced as well.
