"A great piece of history..."
Daithi (Maryland)
If you like to build historical spacecraft then this kit is a must have being the first successful satellite luanched by the USA in 1958... The kit is simplistic but well detailed out of the box (with a bit of imagination it could be furture detailed)... There are a few fiddly areas of the build but with a little patience real go together with no problem... The hardest part was masking and painting the nose cone (it can get a bit interesting)... The rocket opens up to reveal a nicely detailed payload of scientific equipment (radiation detection) and can be enhanced with careful painting... Overall this is a great kit reissued by Glenco Models and is suitable for beginner to advanced modeler alike... Highly recommended...

This kit is excellent considering the age of the molds. Only about 20 parts, not including the rotating stand. Not much flash, decent fit, reasonable amount of detail. Could be super detailed with wiring, etc., but so few references are available I decided to build it out of the box. The stripes on the nose should be painted a dark metallic gray, since the actual material was sandblasted stainless steel. be prepared to have an interesting time masking the tip of the nose cone. The single JPL decal is clear and in register.

Anyone who grew up during the space age has to appreciate this kit. This kit feature's a nicely executed cut away option that shows the instrumentation carried by the satellite. With patience, this kit builds into a museum piece. I'm not crazy about the stand. It's meant to rotate the model and produce a signal sound. I prefer mounting it on a more stable platform. Fantastic Plastic says the Ideal toy company originally produced the kit. This certainly marks another great recovery for the folks at Glencoe.
