California Mission La Purisima Concepcion
This is the La Purisima Concepcion Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:
The eleventh in the mission chain, Mission La Purisima Concepcion (The Immaculate Conception of Mary the Most Pure) was founded on December 8, 1787. During its early years several thousand Chumash Indians were baptized into the Catholic Church. La Purisima prospered. On December 21, 1812, a massive earthquake struck that completely destroyed the mission. It was rebuilt a few miles to the northwest and quickly grew again into a thriving community. Mission life ended in 1834 with the order to secularize California's missions. The buildings of La Purisima fell into disrepair from neglect. The mission was acquired by Santa Barbara County in 1934, and with state and federal funding has been reconstructed and restored to represent the truest image of mission life.:
