California Mission San Antonio De Padua
This is the San Antonio de Padua Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:
Third in the mission chain, San Antonio de Padua was founded by Father Junipero Serra on July 14, 1771. By 1805 more than 1200 Native Americans resided there. The water, soil and climate proved ideal for growing wheat and pasturing cattle and horses. Father Buenaventura Sitjar, who served at San Antonio de Padua for 37 years, developed a series of dams and aqueducts for irrigation. The remnants of this early water system, along with a gristmill, are still there. Due to its remote location, San Antonio de Padua was badly plundered after secularization in 1834. The formidable task of restoration began in 1903, and the mission is now in largely original condition.:
