A frustrating kit to build
By: nimr0d
While I like the fact that one can build two complete models from this kit, the frustration level of actually building those models comes close to erasing that benefit. The parts fit is poor on the majority of the parts, and the ejector pins have been thoughtlessly placed in the molds, resulting in unsightly ejector pin marks in places that make them difficult to remove or fill. The instruction sheet is simply a rudimentary exploded view of the model, showing all the parts, including optional parts that can be used to build a given model. There are no detail views showing how parts are actually supposed to fit or be oriented to one another. With parts fit being generally so poor, it can be difficult and time-consuming to figure out if you've actually mated two parts together correctly. I can only recommend this kit for the experienced modeler who likes a challenge, and is used to reworking a poorly designed and molded kit. I wish that when Round2 re-releases an older AMT kit, they would put as much effort into cleaning up the molds, verifying that the parts actually fit together properly, and redoing the instruction sheets into a proper assembly guide as they put into doing new decal sheets, tires, and packaging.
Fun kit!
The hot rod is great for kitbashing - I used wheels, side mirrors, and a ram air scoop from other kits. Rear tires from a set of aftermarket tires I got here. Really came out nice! The Model T came out pretty nice as well. The removable seat bottom isn't really worth the time - it's almost impossible to get the seat in or out with the steering wheel in place. The emergency brake lever needs to lean outward (towards the door), or there's no room for the steering wheel. There's not that many parts, but with some imagination and a good paint brush, you can get a LOT of detail! **NOTE** If you want to make both cars from this kit, you MUST make the Chopped T, as the street rod (convertible) uses the same body bucket as the Model T. With a bit of imagination, you can make a really nice street rod with the Chopped T body. The instruction sheet is fairly vague; it helps to know what's supposed to go where, because otherwise there's a fair bit of guesswork.
Chopped T, Vintage Hot rod Style
This is another release of a kit that has been around since the sixties. Although it has been reproduced several times, mold flashing is almost non-existant and details are still sharp. I like the fact that two complete vehicles may be built, and several options are provided for construction. This edition includes an outstanding set of pad printed white wall tires, with slicks for the rear and skinnies for the front. Decals have been updated to fit the current Rat Rod fad. The vintage Lincoln 430 c.i. engine with induction options of 3-2 barrel carburetors, a Log Intake Manifold with 6-2 barrels or the Latham Supercharger adds to the vintage vibe of this Hot Rod. I recommend getting two or three copies of this model and exploring different ways to build your cars.
1925 Chopped Ford requires skill
I'm having a laugh reading the comments. I had no trouble putting the original version of this kit together when I was about 12! I grew up on exploded drawing instructions. (Ever put together a Lego?) Parts fit required trial and error and you actually had to sand or modify location points. The assembly and painting of a model kit is supposed to be challenging. You have to reason your way through and develop skills. These skills were put to use later when I assembled and painted real cars. So buy some books, magazines or search the internet for build articles and develop your skills. Less complaining and more building. This is a GREAT kit! Build it any way you want and be creative.
Chopped T
I want to like this kit. The chopped T is definitely a nice body style, especially if you like rat rods. The problems with this kit are the very sparse information from the directions. They do not show where to connect various parts together at all. This is not a good kit for beginners. Also there was a lot of flash on the chrome. But if you have a little model building experience and take your time, you can end up with a pretty nice car.The other half of this model the original stock build I will probably rat rod into something crazy.
Two for One!
Aside from all the flash and thick chrome sprue tree attachment points you can build two nice models from this kit. With the many versions you can build of both cars there will be lots of extra parts for your parts box. I had no problems following the instructions and everything fit into place, just be sure to test fit everything. I found that the orange roof decal had a very, very thin white line on the edge of the left side that I did not see before adhering it to the roof.
It's a challenge
Definitely not for a new builder. The instructions are very minimal but if you take your time and follow the directions in order, you shouldn't have a problem completing this one. I like the fact you get 2 models in this kit and have the option of building the coupe or the convertible. Then you could build the other or share it with a buddy. I heavily modified mine by adding a computer, lights, sound and a motor controlled by an infrared remote control.
Instructions were lack luster
Overall a good kit but the instructions were hard to decipher. Moderate flashing on the parts even the chrome tree and the clear and orange parts nearly shatter if you want to cut them like I did. The kit finished beautifully but kinda of frustrating to get to that point
Model T
Nice kit, parts are clean me well made. Decals and options are fun and easy to follow. Great kit for box build or original.
