"Supermarine Walrus Silver Wings Floatplane -Plastic Model Airplane Kit -1/48 Scale Review"
Alex Biever
This 1/48 scale kit comes from the illustrious British model company called Airfix. In all my years of building model aircraft, I rarely had issues with any of their kits. Because they usually include things that some other companies don’t offer for their kits such as color illustrations and superb step by step instructions too. The pros of this kit are as follows: You have three versions that you can do and the one I did is from the Irish Air Corps (An tAerchór in Irish), Erie, 1939/40. The other two versions included are Flotille (Squadron in French) 53S, l’Aéronavale (Naval Aviation in French), Hortin, France, 1945. The last version you could do is on the cover of the box and that is No. 715 Flight, HMS Cumberland, 1937. On the back of the Irish Air Corps sheet if you want to has diagrams if you want to install bracing wires and controls on your kit. The color illustrations are as usual wonderful with many angles! You have a variety of building options like if you want to have the wings unfolded or not. There’s also the option of having the wheels up or down. You also have the option of having just bombs, depth charges, or none of the above, as well as having the gun ports open or closed. That also goes for the canopy as well. The cons of this are as follows: The building of the engine was a bit of a challenge as it didn’t exactly fit right. The bottom wings also didn’t exactly meet up so I added some putty to fill in the gaps. I didn’t like how they make you put the decals that go inside of the of the depth charges. So my advice on that is put the decal in one half of the depth charge then glue the other half on to make it work. Finally the Irish flag decals on the top and bottom wings are a tad too big. I had to trim them to make it work. In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5. This is too good of a kit to pass up on your model airplane collection! If you can navigate these minor glitches on this kit then you should have no problem doing this kit. Airfix if you’re reading this, all I ask from you is to do a better job of measuring your decals.
