In the last part of the 19th century, the Climax Locomotive Works paved the way toward geared locomotives with a combination of improvements to existing technology and ground-breaking designs.
The horizontal boiler on the Class B Climax was more powerful and efficient than the previous T-boilers.
The first successful model was produced until 1904 and some models continued in service until the early 1950s.
