Facts M4 (A3E8) Sherman tank was the most widely used allied tank of WWII. The M4A1 was an improved version introduced in 1944 and carried a much improved 76mm main gun. This weapon, combined with the Sherman's mobility and numerical superiority enabled it to defeat enemy armour in combat.
