As the limitations of the M3 series became increasingly obvious, work began on an improved version resulting in the M4 "Sherman." Armed with a single 75mm cannon in a rotating turret atop the hull, the M4 became the backbone of American armed forces in World War Two. They later served in the Korean War and were also sold to many other countries, where they were used until the 1970s.
