Lil Nuke

This kit uses a single 29mm composite motor, but can be flown with a ESTES D12-3 using a MMA-1 (not included). Each kit comes complete with nylon elastic shock cord, plastic nose cone, precision machined plywood fins and centering rings, and parachute recovery system. A special PRE-MARKED airframe for fin and launch lug attachment is included to make assembly quick and easy.

"A great introduction to mid-power"

The Lil Nuke was my first legitimate mid-power kit, a gift from my brother in law who wanted to try to set my sights higher than just cloning every kit I ever wanted as a kid. Working with epoxy for the first time was quite harrowing for me, but the rocket turned out great and you'd never know it was built by a total noob. I've heard complaints about the lack of through the wall fins on the Lil Nuke, but to be honest, it doesn't need them. I drilled a series of holes under the fin, and under the fillets on each side to act as glue rivets, and the fins feel as sturdy now as they did 13 years ago when I built the rocket. If I was going to change anything it would be the shock cord mount. LOC uses a method where a nylon loop is glued in with layers of epoxy near the top of the body tube. Effective, but kind of a pain. If I were building this rocket again I'd just buy a three foot length of stout Kevlar, tie it around the motor tube, and drill a hole through the forward centering ring to lead it out. I've built two of these, one in stock configuration, the other as an upscale of a favorite Estes kit, the Ninja, so I guess my brother in law was only partially successful in getting me out of the cloning cycle. Then again, he started it by building a Red Max upscale with a Lil Nuke.
