Description This is a 1/48 Plastic Lockheed P-38J Lightning Fighter Airplane Model Kit by Minicraft. For modelers age 10 and over.
Facts Lockheed's Lightning interceptor was a complete break-away from conventional airframe design, power and armament. The XP-38 was built under tight secrecy and made its maiden flight on January 27, 1939. Its performance justified Lockheed's investment of near $600 thousand of its own funds to complete the prototype. The Army was so delighted with the big new fighter, it lifted the wraps of secrecy from the plane for a transcontinental speed dash on February 11, 1939. The P-38J was the fastest of the Lightnings, with a top speed of 420mph, and was the first fighter suitable for long range bomber escort.
Features All white plastic pieces molded to sprue trees.
This plane is unique with 2-1/2 fuselages: two "full length" (booms) joined by one long tail fin in the rear. The main fuselage sits between the two full length booms and contains the single-seat cockpit. There is a three-bladed propeller on the nose of each boom. Guns are concentrated in the central fuselage pod. Detailed "tricycle" style landing gears. Detailed cockpit and instrument panel. Assembly option of an open or closed cockpit canopy.
