The Armys success with the Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber led the U.S. Navy to acquire the big plane for long ranging patrol missions. The crews of the planes searched the vast oceans for any telltale wakes from enemy submarines or surface vessels, and were well equipped to attack these prey. Due to their dull gray and white color, known as the Sea Search scheme, the big bombers were hard to detect and often were a complete surprise to an unwary target.
