"Good kit, terrible instructions"
jmabry26757 (Romney,WV)
I'm a big fan of NASCAR, and I used to own a large collection of kits that I lost last year in a house fire. So I'm slowly rebuilding my collection. I'm always been a fan of Bobby Allison, so I was excited to see this kit. Overall this is a good kit. The parts are well engineered, and fit together well. The only problem I had was trouble getting the front suspension assembly to fit on the chassis. The kit gave you an op of installing either a 427 or 429 engine. I had trouble getting it to fit in the engine compartment. But this kit has a big problem with the instructions. I seems the person who wrote it was gung ho in the beginning, but just didn't care about the job and rushed thru the job at the end and never looked at what they wrote. The engine assembly instructions are terrific with a lot of detail. The only correction I would make is to leave off the radiator hose until later. But when you get to step 4 the errors start and only get worse. In the roll cage assembly the is a part on the bottom that is just shown with no part number or color. They show the dashboard, but don't tell you that decals are included for the gages. In step 7 and 9 the shocks are shown with painting instructions to paint them yellow. I've never seen a shock that the rods were painted yellow, they are chrome. So I painted the silver. In step 10 the header part numbers are wrong. Parts 27 and 28 do not make the left header. I had to switch one the parts 25 and 26 for the right header to make the part. Part 70 for the left header is actually the right header, and vice versa for part 71. In step 11 it shows the assembly for the wheels, but doesn't tell you the colors. And last In step 12 it shows you to install the dashboard to the body, but if you do that you can't get the body on the chassis because the roll bar is too narrow. I had to glue it to the top of the roll bar, and then install the body to the chassis. There was no call out for the color of the window trim, so I used Bare Metal Foil. The best part is the decals. They are sharp looking, they don't take long after dipping in water to release from the backing, and fit don't with very little use of Microset and Microsol. It takes a little bit of work because of the terrible instructions, but it makes a nice addition to a race car collection.
