ancient Fokker
I have been modeling for some time, having built this kit when I was a kid. I recently purchased a new one and was surprised to see Revell, Venice Calif, 1957 stamped inside the fuselage. The kit is also stamped 1981 on the landing gear plane at the very bottom. So, Revell must make good kits considering; a. Richthofen flew this in 1917/1918, b. The kit was originally make in 1957, c. I'm building one in 2017. Had some minor fit issues with the machine guns and if you don't clean up the flash, you'll have other fit problems during assembly. The decals had some silvering and despite my best efforts I couldn't eliminate them (the weight table and aircraft identification) and the tail decal doesn't line up correctly and is oversized so have some Micro Sol/Set. Rigging was easy as was the overall assembly. I have it a good rating but unless you want to spend a lot this is an excellent model to try you hand at WWI aviation. As always, have fun.
This Fokker is a mixed bag
This kit does have it's flaws but yet it can produce a good looking result. The kit's fit and finish are OK. There was a lot of plastic flash from the molding process so be prepared for a lot of clean-up to get parts to fit well and look good. It is a Skill Level 3 kit, which may be a little over-rated unless you add the flap and strut rigging options with the supplied thread. Others have mentioned the decal silvering on the lettering decals, which I also experienced even though I applied them over glossy paint. Also the poor fitting tail decal can be dealt with by just painting the tail gloss white before applying those to decals - that gives you a lot of flexibility in working those decals into an acceptable position and then blending them smooth with Micro-set.
An Old Friend
I must have built 20 of these when I was a kid, and some finished ones for my daughter and nephew over the years. My grandson just learned how to build models so I introduced this classic kit to him and it came our fair enough, not finished at all but I wanted it to be a kit to learn how to build and do decals, so it is quite fine for his desk. He also learned not to pick it up but the top wing. That was a problem with the real Triplane too. Recommend this for anyone wishing a quiet, quick project or a painstaking modification into a nice triplane. Worth the time and yes I will build another one with the refinements necessary now. I learned how to build it too.
One of a kind
In the '70s Revell released a trio of WWI fighters (Fokker DR.1, SPAD XIII and Sopwith Camel) in an oddball 1/28 scale that have been reboxed off and on since then, and remain popular for their price and detail. They are well engineered, fit well, and have nice detailing that still looks good. Despite its age, the DR.1 kit is detailed and accurate enough to build into a nice representative of the type, is easy to assemble, and its size makes it easier to assemble than a 1/72 or 1/48 kit. When compared to newer releases in the more standard 1/32 scale, the old Revell kits still represent a good value, and an interesting kit to build
One awesome Fokker!
This is a rather large kit in comparison to most. This adds to the display value of such a kit, however, for it's size I think it could be a little more detailed. On the plus side, this plane comes with a rigging guide that's fairly easy to follow as well as two ground crew members and a pretty good representation of the Red Baron himself. The engine is nicely detailed and with a little time and effort the propeller can be made to look like wood. All said and done I would recommend this kit for any WWI enthusiast even despite the unpopular 1/28 scale size.
A Few Updates Needed For This Very Old Kit
I found this in my local model store as one he bought back from a collector and dated 1965, the box showed it too. A mixed bag of very old parts but little flash, dry and brittle decals. Shows as the Werner Voss FI103/17 DR-1 and comes in a nice pale blue plastic. Went together well for such and old kit and prefer it over a few more recent brands. Unusual scale at 1:28 but doesn't sit too far away in size from my 1:32 Sopwith Camel.
Fokker Dr1
Best Fokker Dreidecker I have ever had and built in my 61 years of modeling. I have 5 of these and have built them as different serial numbers(102,103,425,477) and this one will be 454, Lothar von Richthofen. The kit is greatly detailed, and not too difficult to build. The only place that requires over and above attention is the wing and wheel struts, (getting them perfectly straight). Overall great kit that I am 100% happy with.
Excellent Value
Built this model decades ago as a kid and am currently in the process of building it again. I like working in this scale size and wish it was more popular. Not too small, not too big. This can be a relatively simple build or a complex one if the rigging options are utilized. Will be doing rigged control surfaces this time, didn't do so as a kid...lol
Great value
These planes were flown in many colors, so get one and go wild! For the money, you will enjoy the detail and ease of assembly. Engine and wing detail is actually kinda cool. Cylinder detail is surprising. Watch the mold lines on the cowl for a nicer fit. Nice weekend project, it doesn't get any more fun! Easy kit for the youngsters as well!
A great model and easy to put together
A simple model already molded in red plastic. It has detail and the figures are relatively easy to paint with brushes. Decals go on nicely. I would recommend a flat finish before and after putting the decals on. Great display model, too. I have mine in my office, where one of my client's kids stole one of the figures, the Pilot, naturally.
Good value for money.
This kit is typical of Recall in offering great value for money. There is some over flash especially in the fuselage pieces, but this is easy to deal with and once done the pieces fit well together. The instructions are clear and the build relativel smooth. I enjoyed building this aircraft and was pleased with my result.
WWI Biplane German TriWing
This is my second model that I have purchased for my own. I bought it again because it is a good model to build and with a little ingenuity can make this model a show case model
Red Barron tri plane
What a great model. Just what I was looking for. Fun too build and will display in dog fight with sopwith camel and give to my grandson
Only thing missing is snoopy.
This was a great kit. It even came with 3 persons to make a little scene with. It went together well, and is molded in red plastic.
Fokker DR.I
Yes. The Red Barron. one of the best and easiest models i have bought and put together.
Nice kit.
This is a fun-to-build kit and theres the oppurtunity to super detail.
The Red Baron's Flying Circus Mannfred von Richtofen
A great week-end project - I would build this again!
