A tried and true product that I still love
I just recently got back into modeling after taking 20 years off. I still had some of my old supplies including an old empty can of Testor's Dullcote. I decided to order another here recently from HobbyLinc and received it a few days ago on a 1/426 scale Revell USS Arizona. I am happy to report that it is the same great product. It's very forgiving of over coverage. You have to REALLY over-apply it for it to not come out right. It even has served to help hide some finish inconsistencies of semi-gloss paint due to user errors on my part during application. The Dullcote goes on easily and dries dull and clear as it should. The smell is quite strong, though, so I definitely recommend a very well ventilated area. If an easy to use matte/dull finish is your goal without the hassle of having to use and clean an airbrush then you can't go wrong here. It's a must have for new or inexperienced modelers.
Best flat available hands down
If used properly this will create a very nice flat finish. I haven't found anything that produces as flat a finish than Dullcote. I've used this over lacquers, enamels and acrylics. Several mist coats until the desired flatness is achieved. My best results are when I have decanted this and sprayed it through an airbrush without thinning further. The spray can nozzle puts out too much paint in my opinion. Don't get too close to your subject to help avoid pooling and/or runs. If sprayed too heavy it can leave a milky white finish. If sprayed over clear acrylics such as Model Masters or Alclad Aqua Gloss, several mist coats is best. Anything heavier than a mist will tend to attack the acrylic clear and result in a wrinkled finish. It doesn't do this with any colored acrylic paints. Allow 10-15 minutes to dry between mist coats. As always experiment on a test piece first.
Essential Hobbyist E.Q.
Like another reviewer, I too got out of the game for some years but can assure every person who constructs model kits, paints miniature figures, or the like that spraying a piece with a coating of Dullcote will both add the final touch of realism to your piece but also protect it from people handling it. I use it on every work which I don't use a Gloss coating on, like dinosaurs, for example. I would not simply recommend this item but strongly recommend it's use!
Very dependable matte coat.
I use this for a flat finish and protective coat on scale models and wargame miniatures. Dullcote performs well in a wider temperature and humidity range than any other spray sealer I've tried. Multiple light coats are better than one heavy coat; if over-applied, it can, on rare occasions, dry with whitish residue in crevices and recesses. Smells dreadful, but it should be used only with good ventilation, anyway.
Formula Change?
I'm not sure if Rustoleum altered the formula from the original Testor's Dullcote but I have found that in colder or more humid conditions, the final coat is more semi-gloss rather than the reliable dull that it had when it was Testors. I have learned to only use it when conditions are favorable now.
Dull or Matte Finish at it's Best
After trying numerous products (including Krylon and others), I finally found a ready spray product that does not frost the finished product. Although heavy in fumes & odor, this product was what I needed for finishing a model in a flat or matte coat.
Testors Dullcote Spray
This product is great when trying to make a model weathered and dirty. Remember to use primer because this is lacquer. For example in usage, a glossy plane will not be glossy anymore if you spray the dullcote. That's how dullcote works.

Dull
This spray works really well! I like to lightly mist it over things like hub caps to give them more realism. Then just a small black wash to add some shadows, and they look like factory stamped hub caps.

Still the classic
I wish I could find a matte varnish that has such a perfect coverage and light diffusion that further unifies the color scheme of a model as Dullcote for the sake of savings, but none come close.
Hand Down Winner
I did some head to head testing over about a half-dozen matte varnishes, and Dullcote came out ahead in my estimation. Have used it for years at this point and never had a bad coat.
Great product
Great product used as a final top coat. Have been using for quite some time now. Goes on smooth. Wish the cans (content) were available in slightly larger sizes.
Professional FInish
Use this spray to get a professional looking finish in seconds. Makes shiny cockpits and complete paint jobs look professional. JUst a quick spray, not too much.
Spray Dullcote
The go to standard. Only warning is if can is almost empty Don't use on your latest prize, can get uneven spray as can emptys
Best spray dull finish
This is the best spray dull finish coat out there. Great coverage, durability. Will miss them once they are all gone.
Lovve Testors laquers!
As with the glosscote, I never need more than three coats of this stuff. It leaves a nice flat finish.
Awesome product
