Classic Kits(TM) General Steel Castings (GSC) 54' Flat Car -- Conrail - HO-Scale

GSC "Commonwealth" 54' Flat Cars are workhorses ideally suited for all kinds of service. Introduced in the 1950s, these cars are equally at home hauling lumber, machinery, steel slabs and more.
In the 1950s when piggyback service was just becoming popualr, these popular cars were some of the most common flat cars converted for piggyback service because their steel construction was considered strong enough to withstand the strain of carrying trailers. Their 53'-6"-length was ideal for the 32' and 35' trailers then in use. When fitted for piggyback service, the cars were equipped with a hitch and rub rails, numerous tie-downs and bridge plates. In later years, a new hitch replaced the tie-downs, and the cars remained in piggyback service into the 1960s. As piggyback service required ever larger cars, many of these cars were returned to service as general-service flat cars as replacements arrived.
This kit is the correct length and includes early and late piggyback hitches, plus parts for bulkhead and standard versions. They're perfect for use on any layout from the 1950s to the present. See the Vehicles and Freight Cars sections for loads to use with these cars.
