These eight-sided towers were a fixture along the Milwaukee Road, and similar designs were used by other railroads. These towers housed a gateman who manually raised and lowered crossing gates to stop traffic when a train was coming. They were elevated so the gateman could see down the tracks over traffic and other low-level obstructions. Elevated towers were usually placed at busy grade crossings where frequent train moves required additional street traffic safeguards. Related Items
