This is a pretty darn good set, though it has a few things about it that, though useful to someone making a diorama, are mildly disappointing to me. The set is still worth it, since what it adds far outweighs any criticism.
Everyone except the officer pose is in a cap, so keep that in mind when choosing what theater or unit you wish to depict.
The set has one each of the following poses: a well-done officer, a bugler (accurate and kind of awesome), and a flagbearer in a very awkward pose, looking like he is about to pull himself to his feet using the flag as a sort of walking stick. You might be able to tell that I am not enthused about that one.
You would end up with two each of these poses: nicely posed sergeant, a casualty, and the fairly useless coffee drinker. I’ve been toying with the idea of using him as a sort of “unprepared†marker, just like the casualty makes a good disruption marker. The rules I am using currently don’t require either of those things, but they are available to me, though I would rather have something more useful that Mr. Coffee.
This brings us to the bulk of the set. It has seven each of the following: standing/firing, kneeling/firing, and 3 different advancing poses. There are also six figures in a reloading pose. All of these poses are excellent for wargaming, so that could cover a multitude of sins.
These figures paint up well, and they are pretty good at keeping shape. I’m glad to see that IMEX didn’t tack a bayonet on the end of every rifle (like they do in some other period sets), and the rifles don’t break off unless confronted with a determined toddler. I’m pretty happy with them, and they provide excellent variety for the gaming table, especially the different advancing poses.
I would recommend this set. After painting and basing, it fits in well with the following sets I use: Italeri Set 6012 “Union Infantry with Zouaves,†Italeri Set 6013 “Union Cavalry,†Italeri Set 6038 “Union Artillery,†Italeri Set 6014 “Confederate Infantry,†Italeri Set 6011 “Confederate Cavalry,†IMEX Set 503 “Union Cavalry,†IMEX Set 501 “Union Artillery,†IMEX Set 506 “Confederate Infantry,†IMEX Set 504 “Confederate Cavalry,†and IMEX Set 502 “Confederate Artilleryâ€
