The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) assault gun was Germany's most-produced fully tracked armored fighting vehicle (AFV) during World War II. It was built on a slightly modified Panzer III chassis, replacing the turret with an armored, fixed superstructure mounting a more powerful gun. Initially intended as a mobile assault gun for direct-fire support for infantry, the StuG III was continually modified, and later it was employed as a tank destroyer. Of simple construction with a very low silhouette and easy to hide they were difficult targets to destroy, a cost-effective AFV, this are some of the many advantages of the excellent German design around the first Assault gun in history: the StuG III.
This book covers the StuG III Ausf. A-E versions design, development, tactical employment and use in combat up to the first half of 1942. In those years its main role was solely as an assault artillery with a 7.5 howitzer-like gun in close support of the infantry. The book is very interesting, concise and to the point. It comes with many tables about production history, armor Penetration, etc. with a wealth of black and white photographs, excellent color plates and a cutaway drawing. This book makes a great introduction of the early years of one of the most successful AFV of WW2.
