The P-40B was the first production version of the P-40 series. It began in an attempt to improve the performance of the earlier radial engined P-36 Hawk. Powered by a 1150 hp Allison V-12 engine, the P-40 was the main fighter of Claire Chennault'sAmerican Volunteer Group, the ''Flying Tigers'', who fought against Japanese forces in China before the US entered WWII.
