The TBF-1 Avenger was available in sufficient numbers to be present for the outbreak of WWII despite the fact that it only made its first flight on August 1, 1941. The Fi156 was the primary battlefield observation and reconnaissance aircraft of the German Air Force during WWII. Featuring a high aspect ratino wing with leading edge slats and flaps, the plane had excellent STOL (short take-off and landing) char acteristics. A Storch piloted by German spy Otto Scorzny was used to rescue Italian dictator Mussolini in 1943.
