Baldwin's VO-660 was first introduced in 1940. And while it bore a similar appearance to the VO-100, the VO-660 was approximately three feet shorter in length. The first VO-660 was ordered by the Northern Pacific Railroad, and had an oval grill (no t manufactured by Stewart Hobbies). Like most steam loco builders, Baldwin experimented with diesel engines through the 1920s and early 30s. In 1939, the first of the new model VO-1000 (so named as it generated 1000 horsepower) switchers was introduced. In 1941, the original side-mou nted radiator was replaced by a front-mounted system.
