The first leg of its 2,525-mile journey began aboard the Burlington, who handled the train from Chicago to Denver. Next, passengers rode the Rio Grande to Salt Lake City, where the train was handed off to the Western Pacific for the run to San Francisco. Careful scheduling provided passengers with breathtaking daytime views of spots like the Feather River and Rocky Mountains, while the Nevada deserts and Plains states were crossed at night.
