This 1/48 scale kit comes from a well-known Czech model company called Special Hobby. Unfortunately this is one, if not, the worst kit I’ve ever built from them. I have built a number hit or miss kits from them over the years but this one is an all-time low in my opinion. The pros for this kit are as follows: You have three paint schemes to choose from and the one I did is on the cover of the box called Skua Mk.II, L.2963, 803 Squadron FAA, HMS Ark Royal, pilot Lt. C.H. Filmer, radio operator/gunner Midn. T.A. McKee, DSC. The other two paint schemes included are; Skua Mk.II, L2940/A6A, 800 Squadron FAA, HMS Ark Royal, pilot Capt. R.T. Partridge, DSO, RM, radio operator/gunner Lt. R.S. Bostock and Skua Mk.II, L2991/Q. The illustrations are in full color with all the right views. The decals, though hard to get off the paper, one of them ripped, were easy to apply to the kit.
The cons for this kit are as follows: Pretty much nothing fits requiring way too much sanding and spackle! The canopy sections are too small and I accidently broke one while trying to sand it. The instructions are incomprehensible and hard to understand. There’s no provision for a 500lb bomb, eight 30lb practice bombs, and four wing-mounted 7.7mm (.303 caliber) Browning machine guns the Skua carried in real life. For some reason, the cover of the box said the plane is called the Fairey Skua; in reality it was Blackburn, not Fairey that made the Skua. At least they got the correct name of the aircraft on the instructions.
In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5. Special Hobby if you’re reading this, I hate to say this but this is the one kit you need to start all over again from scratch. I believe, to me, this kit feels rather unfinished. With a little more research and a little more effort, I think the revised kit would yield better results.
