With many revolutionary features incorporated into her design, the Yamato was completed in December 1941, and met her final fate at the hands of American Navy carrier aircraft in the South China Sea while on a one way mission to Okinawa. This model features minor modifications to Tamiya's previous Yamato replicas Items 78002 and 78014, and has her looking as she did just prior to departing for her final mission, in an exquisite 1/350 scale assembly kit display model. The Yamato's massive imposing silhouette is accurately reproduced, and both the main gun turrets and secondary armament turrets can be rotated even after assembly.

The Mogami together with three cruisers of the same type- the Mikuma, the Suzuya and the Kumano- was designed and completed in 1935 as a large-scale light cruiser of an 8500-class. Protecting the Mogami was thickened, highly shell-proof armor effective in warding off extremely large falling-angle shells of U.S. heavy cruisers. But most impressive was the Mogami½s 152,000hp engine, the same employed on the battleship ½Yamato,½ the biggest battleship ever produced in the world. With the termination of the London Naval Reduction Treaty in 1937 the Mogami had its guns upgraded from 15.5cm triple to 20cm double guns. A main characteristic of the heavily armored Mogami class cruisers was the use of weight saving techniques. This, however, resulted in concerns for the ships overall strength and stability. The Kumano, the last Mogami cruiser completed in 1937, was subsequently fitted with a large bulge, and the upper deck was built narrower and lower than the first two Mogami cruisers. The Kumano was originally fitted with 15.5cm triple guns, with a speed of 920m/sec., a max. range of 27,400m and a projection angle up to 55 degrees. These 15.5cm triple guns were highly respected by artillery experts. The Kumano participated in many battles during WWII including the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Easter

The Musashi was the second ship in the Yamato-class which were the largest battleships ever built. Completed in 1942, the Musashi took part in various campaigns before finally meeting her fate at the hands of U.S. Navy aircraft in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Tamiya's precision-made assembly kit model recreates this giant battleship in exquisite detail, including her defensive anti-aircraft suite of numerous single 25mm cannons on the main deck. This different anti-aircraft armament makes for an interesting comparison with the Yamato. Tamiya rereleased Musashi in 1981 and this great model kit is available again with new mast parts.

One of the largest carriers of WWII, Shinano was originally planned to be the third installment of Yamato class battleships. The construction of this monstrous vessel was started soon after the Japanese defeat at Midway and was completed on Nov. 19, 1944. Its overall length stretched to 266m and it displaced 62,000t. It was well protected with heavily armored sides, inherited from Yamato, and a reinforced flight deck able to withstand the direct blast of a 500kg bomb. On its way to be fitted out however, it was spotted and torpedoed by an American submarine, later capsizing off the shores of Shionomisaki. A plastic model kit from the Water Line Series by Tamiya.
