"The devil is in the detail."

I model SP and its subsidiaries. This car is part of the consist for train No. 1, the Sunset Limited of 1956. On this train the equipment had been all Budd corrugated side cars from 1950 onwards and the entire train is Walthers’ products including Mainline. Fresh out of the box, at 154g this diner is solid and it rolls very freely. There are molded parts above the galley and mid car that are okay. There are full sheet decals to apply. The glazing is good with full interior diner detail, except for the galley. The overall appearance of the car is fairly good, but there are some downsides. Although the diaphragms are nice the truck mounted couplers need to be changed. They are short shank couplers already but they are not scale heads which will shorten the distance between the cars for a more prototypical look. Half of the cars in this train are earlier Walthers pre-Mainline. Those needed to have the grabs applied too, but the parts were included in the box. Now they have to be purchased as separate items at $9 a copy. Although there are starter points where to drill, for me drilling with a pen vise was very difficult. (If a company introduces a miniature drill press I’d sure buy one). So when you buy and build you’re looking at a $38 model without lighting and only you know what your time is worth. In this price range this model is below average and I definitely wouldn’t recommend this model to any beginners.
