PzKpfw IV Ausf H4 Tank

This is a 1:35 Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. H4 German Tank from Academy Plastics. It's for experienced modelers.

The Panzer IV, in its many versions, was one of the most widely used German tanks of WWII. The Panzer IV was powered by a Maybach V-12 engine which provided over 300hp and was connected to the drive sprockets via a 6-speed transmission. The H-model of this tank was introduced in 1943 and featured thicker armor to provide better protection against the Soviet T-34/85s and JS-IIs.

"1/35 Academy Panzer IV Ausf.H with Armor"
Christopher A. Wing (Fresno, CA)
The 1/35 Academy Panzer IV Ausf.H with Armor, kit No. 13233 is a good base kit for testing your modeling skills on. The hull piece will require some fitting of sheet styrene pieces to seal up the motor mounting openings on the floor of this part. The challenge for me was to see if my model building and painting skills could make this problematic dated kit look as close to the real vehicle as possible, despite some of the kit's soft detailed parts and it's commamder figure with oversized hands. Installation of the turret side armor was troublesome, but after repairing some of the broken mounting brackets and dry fitting them for proper alignment, I was able to successfully complete the turret/side armor assembly. The tracks are vinyl parts that will assemble with Super Glue. The commander's hatch can be positioned in the open or closed position. The bow MG 34 barrel has a too thick for scale in appearance, however if installed properly it can be a movable part. The coaxial mg 34 barrel also appears too thick for scale. In addition, the MG 34 mounted on the commander's cuppola is toylike in appearance. However, all of these MG 34 parts will look slightly more realistic after painting them. Tool clamps are rectangular blobs of plastic with no clamp buckle detail. Other pioneer tools appear too small for scale. The molded tow cable will improve in appearance after painting and weathering of this piece is completed. The muffler on the rear of the vehicle does not line up properly on the mounting brackets after installation. The builder must be very careful when installing the mounting brackets for the side plate armor as the bracket and mounting hangers are small and fragile parts. Application of the tri-tonal camouflage pattern by use of an airbrush is highly recommended. This model is recommended for intermediate to advanced model builders, due to the build issues mentioned previously. If the builder pays diligent attention to following the instructions carefully and practices some fundamental painting and weathering techniques, then the builder can make this model into a decent looking replica of this historically ubiquitous German WWII armored tank. In retrospect a builder at the intermediate to advanced level may want to consider spending a little more money for other manufacturer's higher quality versions of this same vehicle that are currently on the market. However, for those on a limited budget who want a challenge, this kit could work for you.
