"Hawker Typhoon Mk.1B (Car Door) Fighter Review"
Alex Biever
This 1:24 scale kit comes from a familiar British model company that we all know and love, Airfix! The pros of this kit are as follows: You have four paint schemes to choose from and the one I’ve chosen is No. 174 (Mauritius) Squadron, Royal Air Force Holmsley South, Hampshire, England, June 1944. The other three paint schemes included are; (On the cover of the box) Aircraft flown by Squadron Leader Roland “Bee” Beamont (DFC & Bar), No. 609 Squadron, Royal Air Force Manston, Kent, England, April 1943., No. 486 (New Zealand) Squadron, Royal Air Force Tangemere, West Sussex, England, December 1942., Aircraft flown by Squadron Leader Denis Crowley-Milling (DFC & Bar), No. 181 Squadron, Royal Air Force Appledram, England, June 1944. I find the illustrations are well done as usual and the painting of the plane is a blast. It has a lot of features you can do with this kit such as the option of having an electric motor you could order from airfix.com, as well as three building options. They all involve the engine as you could have it completely exposed, partially exposed, or completely covered. The few cons of this kit are as follows: I find the engine assembly to be quite a hassle even though I followed the instructions word for word. I also found some cracks from the edges of the fuselage and wings even though I had glued them tight. I originally bought some special putty I bought to correct the problem. It turns out somehow I lost the putty. But then I found spackle in a tube that is used to fix holes in walls. I read the tube and it says its washable and paintable on any surface so I applied some on the aircraft and worked just like magic! For these reasons, I give this kit a perfect 5 stars out 5! If you enjoy the history of the RAF as it celebrates its centennial this year in 2018, then this kit is a must have for you collection! You would not be disappointed! To close out this review, here’s some advice; be sure to use spackle not putty to fill in the cracks on whatever kit you’re working on. Trust me it works!
