This DBRM is a nice Estes kit, but I really didn’t like those 3-piece balsa fins. Besides being a pain to assemble, they were of a very soft & floppy 1/8 inch balsa. I was too lazy to reinforce the fins with carbon tissue or fiberglass, and I finally decided I didn't want the weight of plywood, so just made my own one-piece basswood fins. Perfect. I did reinforce those wimpy cardboard centering rings with layers of balsa; glued it on and trimmed to the size of the cardboard; now they're stronger and take the glue (I used mostly epoxy) better. I added a kevlar line attached through the top centering ring, tied to a PS II elastic shock cord, and have added a PS II cloth parachute for recovery. There should be enough space inside to use a Chute Release with bigger motors. This should all make the DBRM strong enough for any hobby composite motor this bird can hold. I will post a photo when the decor is complete. (Mine will be the yellow MAX ;-)
