California Mission San Diego De Alcala
This is the San Diego de Alcala Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:
Known as the Mother of the Missions, Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded July 16, 1769, by Father Junipero Serra. It was the first of the 21 missions and California's first church. Several hundred Indians attacked the mission in 1775, killing a priest and burning the church. Realizing they could not compete with Spanish guns, the Indians eventually cooperated with the padres in rebuilding. By 1797 the mission had 50,000 acres of land with a variety of crops and 32,000 head of livestock. For 12 years after secularization, the mission was used by the U.S. Army to stable horses. Restoration began in 1931. Within ten years the mission again became an active parish and in 1976 was designated a Minor Basilica by Pope Paul VI.:
