This is the San Francisco Solano Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:. Founded on July 4, 1823, San Francisco Solano was the last of the 21 missions to be built. It was also the only one founded without prior approval of the Church, as Father Jose Altimira and Governor Arguello conspired to halt an expanding Russian presence. In 1826, Father Altimira's harsh treatment of the Native Americans led to the mission being attacked and burned. He was forced to flee. A kinder replacement, Father Fortuni, rebuilt the mission and by 1830 nearly 1000 Indians were in residence. San Francisco Solana gained more significance in California history when it became
