California Mission San Juan Capistrano
This is the San Juan Capistrano Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:
The seventh mission, San Juan Capistrano was founded on November 1, 1776, by Father Junipero Serra. Famous for beautiful gardens, it's the spring home for thousands of swallows that annually migrate from their winter homes in Central America. A small chapel completed in the first year is now the oldest California building still in use - and the only church still standing where Father Serra is known to have said Mass. A large stone church completed in 1806 was destroyed in the 1812 earthquake and never rebuilt. After secularization, the mission lay near ruin. Father John O'Sullivan started restoration in 1910, and by 1918 it was again an active church. Today the mission and grounds are wonderfully restored and serve as an active parish for the city of San Juan Capistrano.:
