Another great little kit by Airfix
By: clunymike
This is a very well done kit of one of the most iconic fighters of WWII. The fit is good, the details are crisp, and the panel lines are nice and clean (maybe a little too pronounced, but at least you can tell they're there). The kit only required a little sanding and puttying. There was a little bit of flash on my kit, for example the antenna was pretty much ruined by it, and I had to replace it with a piece of wire. I was also annoyed about how some of the pieces were connected to the sprue. The control stick for example was connected right in the middle, and I'm not sure how anyone could avoid breaking it in half. Other than that it was a lot of fun. I liked all of the options: you can choose from canopy open or closed, landing gear up or down, flaps up or down, and a few others. Most everything went together well and it looks great when you're done.
Great kit all around

The new Airfix kits are leaps and bounds over the old ones I remember. This one is no different. The fit is great, the detail is actually really well done for the cost of the kit (with the exception of the cockpit, which is a decal, but its not a deal breaker)and the finished product with a bit of modeling is awesome. My example had some weird moulding issue, with the sides of the fuselage having some strange marks on it. I though that primer would take care of it, but it wasnt enough... not a big deal as I am totally getting another of these. Its an easy weekend kit, and a great buddy or first build with a young modeler.
A must have kit

This is a really good kit to be creative with. I've been wanting to build the old crow P-51D for a long time but couldn't find what I was looking for until I saw this kit. it's easy to understand why this kit is currently unavailable. True the plastic is soft but, just be careful! The decals are a mix of academy and Airfix they seemed to hold up pretty well. So far this is one of the best P-51D kits I've built and when I get the chance I'm going to build some more.
But, I promise to share some of them with others.
New mould, perfect
I actually have 2 of these: one built, one almost ready, but both from the 308th squadron. One was painted for the less known smokey but modified to be an early P51D, before the fillet being mandatory added to the rudder. The other one will be miss mimi 2 in late colours. I must say that if you shake the box in the right way, it is possible that the model falls out completelly assembled Perfect fit, several versions possible, and in my opinion, the best P-51D in1/72 on the marked. And it is cheap
Airfix 1/72 P-51

This kit is excellent, from the separate bubble canopy and frame to the detailed wheel wells, THIS is have a model should be designed and manufactured. It's obvious a lot of thought went into the engineering and I salute Airfix not only for the quality but also for keeping the price reasonable. The decal sheet is beautiful and thorough and the instructions are handsome. I highly recommend this kit. It builds into a beautiful reproduction.
Just a great all-around deal

I've done two of these kits now, and fit has been very good (not perfect) on both. The recessed panel lines are accurate and deep enough for 1/72. The weakest areas for this kit are the main gear (very weak attach point), and the small items on the sprue have been difficult to remove cleanly. Almost no flash on anything except the small parts. For 8 bucks, I'll probably do a couple more and have fun trying different schemes and techniques!
Great detail, as normal with Airfix

This kit has simple instructions, and is a very simple build. I had a decent experience with the silver paint, but I've learned better application methods. I do with that in these smaller kits, that Airfix would have more detail, as they have a much detail for the cockpit. This is also a great kit to practice decaling on, as it has a fair bit of small decals.
excellent kit with incredible details and some nice options

This is an excellent kit with great details on every piece. I loved all the options: landing gear extended or retracted, flaps up or down, canopy open or closed. I'm considering purchasing another kit to build with different options selected this time.
It is a fast and fun build. Thoroughly enjoyed! 5 stars are not enough!
P-51D

this is an excellent kit. Airfix really did a good job with their new molds. They have issued this kit several times with different marking. I have a F-51D for the Korean War era. Scalemates show that to be a different reissue of the same kit. I really enjoyed building it.
Fantastic

I have several Airfix brand models and this one is exceptional. The details and panel lines are very impressive. No flash or erroneous plastic anywhere. With such a low price, I bought two, and I'm thinking of making an entire squadron now!
