"Dewoitine D510 Spanish Civil War Monoplane Fighter Review"
Alex Biever
This 1/48 scale kit is from a Ukrainian model company called Dora Wings. Until now, I’ve never heard of this company. I’ve worked on other Ukrainian model companies kits in the past and to me they’ve been hit or miss and this one is a near miss. The pros in this kit are as follows: There are five paint schemes you could build. Two of them are the D.510J tested for the Japanese Army and Navy by Marcel Doret in 1935. I ended up doing one of the three paint schemes of the Spanish Republican Air Force in 1938. You could also have the option of having landing gear spats or not in which I did the latter. As well as this, you also have option of having two machine guns above the engine or not in which I did the former. The building of the aircraft is decent and the painting of the aircraft is not too bad either. The illustrations for painting are in color which is a plus in my book. The cons of this kit are as follows: The photo-etched pieces that are supposed go on the resin seat don’t stay on at all so I decided to forgo it all together. The instructions on how to build this aircraft are rather inconsistent with pieces not labeled at all like which landing gear struts you’ll need to put it together. I also found out that the decals are a little too big and hard to get off especially the rudder decals which ripped apart. I had to trim them to match the size of the rudder. The most serious con in my book is that for some inexplicable reason, there’s not paint list you’ll need to paint this aircraft! I had to call a friend of mine, who worked on this kit before, as I had to ask him what colors I would need. Well, for those of you who would like to build this kit, here are the paints or equivalents you’ll need to do it: From Tamiya you’ll need XF-13 J.A. Green. From Testors you’ll need 1146 Metallic Silver, 1183 Flat Rubber, and 1108 Gloss Light Blue. Finally from Model Master you’ll need 1735 Wood, 4675 Flat Rust, 4674 Leather, 2772 Fire Red, 1795 Gunmetal, and 1406 Exhaust. In conclusion, I give this kit a rating of 2.5-3 stars out of 5. Dora Wings if you’re reading this I highly recommend that you need to have a paint list for your future kits because it’s a matter of necessity to have one.
