In some ways, World War I encounters between Ottoman soldiers of the aging Turkish Empire and Australian/New Zealand soldiers of the newly organized ANZAC represented a clash of old and new. That battlefield dynamic is nicely captured by author Si Shepard in this Osprey Combat series book. The narrative focuses on two vicious fights on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915, and the important battle of Beersheba in Palestine in 1918.
The author takes the time to present the sides in their proper context, and to note the performance of both was marked by exceptional bravery under the circumstances. The text is very nicely supported by period photographs and by some excellent modern illustrations and battle diagrams. Well recommended to students of the First World War.
