the worst ever
I’ve built countless model kits over the years, but the Fokker F27 1:72 scale model kit is by far the worst one I’ve ever encountered. It’s a poorly designed, poorly executed disaster in every aspect—absolutely nothing about this kit is enjoyable. It feels like it was thrown together with no care or attention to detail, and I honestly regret wasting both my time and money on it.
Instructions: A Puzzle with No Picture
Let’s start with the instructions, which were, quite frankly, horrendous. The first thing that hit me was how poorly printed they were. The diagrams were blurry, the text was tiny and hard to read, and worst of all, key steps were missing entirely. I couldn’t even tell what some of the parts were meant to be, as they were barely labeled, and the images didn’t give me any helpful guidance. The vague nature of the instructions forced me to guess multiple times about the placement of parts, making the whole process incredibly frustrating. I found myself checking online forums to figure out what went where, but even that didn’t help much because other modelers had the same complaints.
It was like putting together a puzzle with missing pieces and no reference image. There was no sense of progression or satisfaction in the build—just confusion and frustration.
Plastic Parts: Cheap and Misaligned
Now, onto the parts themselves. The quality of the plastic used for this kit was absolutely abysmal. The plastic felt flimsy and brittle, like it would snap in half if you even looked at it too hard. I’ve worked with some kits that use softer plastic, which is more forgiving and easier to work with, but this felt like a cheap, hard plastic that gave little room for error.
The molding was where things really went downhill. The parts had significant flash lines all over them, and in some cases, the mold seemed to have misaligned in production, meaning I had to spend an excessive amount of time sanding, filing, and trimming just to make parts fit together. And even then, they didn’t really fit properly. The fuselage parts were so warped that it took an absurd amount of force to make them connect. I thought I might break the kit just trying to get things to fit! The wings, especially, were poorly molded and had visible gaps and warps straight out of the box. It was clear from the start that this kit was rushed through production without any quality control.
Fit and Assembly: A Disaster
The actual assembly was the most painful part of this entire experience. Even when I managed to get the pieces cleaned up and roughly aligned, the fit was disastrous. The fuselage halves didn’t come together properly, leaving large unsightly gaps that wouldn’t close, no matter how hard I tried. I ended up using copious amounts of glue and filler to seal those gaps, but the seams were still visible even after hours of sanding.
The tail section was another nightmare. The parts didn’t align properly at all, and I had to glue and reposition several pieces just to get something vaguely resembling a solid structure. The landing gear was poorly designed, and the small details around the wheel wells were so poorly molded that I had to skip them entirely. Every time I tried to assemble a new section, it felt like the parts were fighting back.
The wings were even worse—completely warped and asymmetrical, making it almost impossible to attach them in a straight line. They didn’t even line up with the fuselage properly. The attachment points were so poorly designed that I ended up using a combination of super glue, modeling putty, and extra clamps just to get them to stick in place. And even then, the final result was a crooked, unstable assembly that barely stayed together. I didn’t feel a sense of accomplishment when I finished; instead, I just felt relief that it was over.
Decals: Thin, Brittle, and Useless
When I finally got to the decals, I thought things might improve. But no, this was another major letdown. The decals were terribly thin and fragile, and they started tearing almost immediately as I tried to peel them off the backing sheet. Applying them was a nightmare—despite using decal solution, they refused to sit properly and often curled up or slid around, making them hard to position. The kit’s decals were poorly printed, too—some of the text was nearly unreadable due to smudging, and the colors didn’t match up with the images shown on the box. When I did manage to get them in place, they started to peel off after only a few days, despite my best attempts at sealing them with clear coats.
It felt like the entire point of adding decals—enhancing the realism—was completely ignored. They were such a poor fit for the model that I would have been better off leaving them off entirely.
Paint: A Complete Letdown
The paint supplied in the kit was another massive disappointment. The paints were thin, streaky, and didn’t cover well at all. I had to apply multiple coats just to get a semi-even base, but even then, it looked patchy. The paint didn’t adhere properly to the plastic, especially around the engine and wing areas. I thought maybe I’d be able to salvage it with a topcoat, but that only seemed to make the problem worse. The final finish was dull, uneven, and just didn’t reflect the sleek, clean lines of the real Fokker F27.
I eventually gave up on using the provided paint and bought my own, just to make the model look decent. But no matter how much work I put in, I could never get it to look the way I imagined. It always had a cheap, rushed feel to it, which is exactly what it was.
Final Thoughts: A Total Waste of Time and Money
At the end of the day, I can honestly say that this Fokker F27 kit is a nightmare from start to finish. It’s poorly designed, terribly executed, and an absolute waste of time and money. The plastic was flimsy, the instructions were incomprehensible, the fit was appalling, and the decals and paint were worse than useless.
It’s clear that no effort was put into ensuring quality with this kit. It felt like a half-hearted attempt to cash in on an established aircraft model without putting in the effort that would make it a worthwhile build. I’ve built some challenging models before, but this one was frustrating to the point of being painful. No amount of time and patience could salvage the overall experience.
If you value your time, your sanity, and your hobby, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this Fokker F27 kit. There are countless other models out there that will give you a satisfying, enjoyable build—this is not one of them. Save yourself the headache and find something else to work on. This kit is an absolute disaster in every aspect.
