"The modeler has a lot to do with this one"

I have deeply mixed feelings about this model. I'm a novice modeler and I have to tell you I had a devil of a time with this. But as it turns out, I really love it! Here are the pros and cons: Pros: It's affordable; interesting (not a Fokker or Sopwith like most WWI airplane models available); it's got good historical information and several cool sets of decals along with multiple suggestions for historically-accurate painting. Cons: you don't merely assemble this, you have to *build* it. There are lots of construction challenges, and the instructions are a little vague at times. It requires you to bore some holes in the model, which I was not altogether prepared to do, and then when I did it, I discovered to my frustration that I hadn't put them at quite the right spot. Unlike every other model I've built (not that there have been many), there aren't always male/female bits where the pieces come together. For example, when you attach the wings to the fuselage, they're smooth; you just glue them together and hope for the best. For the lower wings, I actually cut a new piece out of some surplus (there are surplus pieces in the kit) and glued it to the underside of the plane to support the wings and also to give the landing gear something to attach to. THe worst part was some of the pieces were warped, like they got overheated and started melting. So the cockpit literally didn't fit at all. Fortunately there was a surplus piece that was similar which I adapted to the model. It was not a great fit, but the only other option was giving up and I'd already invested too much effort to do that. But the consequence was that everything is a little bit off-kilter. Bottom line: It won't be perfect, but it will improve your skills (including patience, resiliency, improvisation) and if you get it done, it's very satisfying. I'm already looking forward to my next one.
