California Mission Santa Ines

This is the Santa Ines Missions of California Educational Project. Parental Supervision is Recommended.:

Founded by Father Estevan Tapis on September 17, 1804, Santa Ines became the 19th mission and quickly flourished - surrounded by miles of fertile land in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. It was also a lonely place with few visitors. Travelers were so rare that when one was spotted, bells were rung and everyone at the mission came to greet them. The original chapel was destroyed in the earthquake of 1812 and the present brick and adobe building was completed in 1817. Although the Chumash Indians learned their trades well, in 1824 they revolted against their harsh treatment from soldiers and burned many of the mission buildings. After secularization, Santa Ines fell into disrepair. Major restoration began in 1947, financed by the Hearst Foundation. Today the mission is an active parish, cared for by the Franciscan Order.:
