Great detail
This is your typical AMT model kit, meaning, great detail to a fault, why not have the back side windows molded with the rear window, but since they are separate why not make them easily positionable instead of just making them to fall in place and wherever they end up is good enough, and where is the rearview mirror or side mirror, I had to find one myself, little things like that are common with AMT kits. With that being said this is a great model of a significant vehicle, I had the pleasure of seeing one of these in person at a car show in Mentor Ohio almost 20 years ago, I will always remember that car. This model realistically and accurately depicts that car. With that being said I deviated in 2 areas from the real car, I chose to put the bucket seats instead of the correct bench seat, and I added the dog dish hubcaps, which I would have opted for and just popped them off for racing.
Fairlane Challenge
I've had some issues with AMT kits in the past. I agree that this kit has a lot of detail (fuel pump, ignition coil, vacuum advance, etc.) But my kit has one obvious flaw: There are no obvious contact points where the water pump meets the timing cover. This was a problem because the fan/alternator/crankshaft pulley assembly and the lower radiator hose must interface accurately between the water pump and the one piece radiator/forward chassis. Also the crankshaft pulley did not clear the front sway bar which had to be removed. The lower radiator hose was also removed from the water pump. Engine/transmission is properly installed. I admit that I like these AMT kits which present a challenge, but I would advise new hobbyists to avoid the 1966 Fairlane for now. Seasoned model builders, start your engines.
No longer a sleeper
When this kit was reissued I dug out my earlier version of this kit. I had been reluctant to build it as I've heard horror stories about AMT kits. I was pleasantly surprised by the detail of this kit and the small amount of flash. The kit cane together relatively easy. My concern was the windshield and windows should have come in one piece which would have it easier to install. And instead of a chrome piece for the fender emblem a decal would have been better. The engine had so much detail I felt bad for glueing it together and not showing the engine block and the heads. I recommend this kit but not for beginners. I rate this kit a 5 out of 5.

When I first started this kit,I thought I was going to be disappointed. There was a lot of flashing on the parts, but no more than other kits that I have done from AMT or MPC. The more I got done the more I liked it. The motor has good detail but you don’t have any options unless you dig into your spare parts bin. I didn’t like the fact that you don’t get any chrome rims with this kit, but that wasn’t a big deal for me because I have a large inventory of extra rims. Everything did fit very well and the interior had some good detail. All in all this is a good kit.
Nicely detailed.
I was on the fence about this one due to prior experiences with AMT kits. I was really surprised at the level of detail and the lack of casting flash. The kit was very nicely detailed, inside and out. The 427 detail was a home run, one of the best I've seen. The decals made it so it could be build as a race car, but they had no slicks!! If they would have added a set of slicks and a set of headers, this would have been a great kit to build as a stock or drag setup. Bang for the buck, definitely worth it.
66 Fairlane
This was another AMT build that was quite enjoyable, good parts fit and very little to no flash. The main concern which was brought up also be another reviewer is the water pump/lower radiator hose. I ended up cutting my hose off due to the fact that it was routed through the fan blade. Kit has great interior and engine detail although now has no lower hose, which 90% of my builds I end up leaving that hose off anyway.
Fun kit
Excellent product - Fit was great and flash was light. I did have a smug on the rear chrome bumper but that wasn't going to matter much because Im spraying all the chrome in Alclad chrome paint. Instructions were well done and easy to follow. The 427 is molded excellent and the detail overall is excellent. I painted it Tamiya Red with a Black interior. A well done kit. I would recommend this kit to all builders.
