Nice finished product with help.
Even though I don’t have a large permanent layout every couple of years I get the bug to add a building or two. I have a number of structures in stock but I really wanted to add this one to my collection. It’s a nice looking kit with a large footprint once completed. On the “pro†side it looks GREAT as a finished product. On the “con†side however I was disappointed by a couple of things. The biggest let down was the fact the base is made out of cardboard. It’s the only model I’ve built with a cardboard base and for the cost of the kit I think Faller could have provided a nice plastic base. I bought some additional styrene sheeting to make a sturdier base. They also went cheap on the window glass which was simply very thin plastic film. Finally, the barb wire around the upper wall is so thin it’s actually invisible once installed. Fortunately I found some light gauge springs I could stretch out to look like spiral razor wire. In the end I added my own touches, painted some tiny people bright orange to look like inmates, made my own signage, billboards, shrubs and built a stage in the prison yard… an homage to the theatre I retired from after 35 years. All in all I love the finished product. I would recommend it if it’s the type of building you’re looking for just be ready to do a lot of extra work and add extra materials if you want it to turn out great. (I’m currently working on a couple of other kits that are going to turn out well without additional basics.) I haven’t taken any photos yet but I’ll add them when available.
